The Phantom is one of Rolls-Royce’s most popular models in the modern era, and in large part, that’s thanks to the mighty V12 engine under the hood. The powertrain, which is also shared by models like the Ghost, is nothing short of a spectacle of engineering, largely responsible for giving the Phantom its signature buttery smooth ride.

In this day and age, when more and more marques are embracing electrification, motors like the Phantom’s V12 are becoming a bit of a rarity. To celebrate its continued excellence, as well as the Phantom’s 100th anniversary, we’ve decided to dig into everything that makes the V12 engine and the Phantom such a special combo.

Rolls-Royce V12 Engine at a Glance

The current iteration of the 6.75-liter Twin-Turbo V12 engine actually started with the Phantom VIII, which was introduced into the world in 2017. The engine creates a stunning amount of force—up to 563 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. The engine is linked to a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission.

These power specs grant the Phantom a top speed of 155 miles per hour, and allows it to do 0 to 60 in just 5.1 seconds. This speed is especially impressive given the Phantom’s bulky silhouette and curb weight of over 5,000 pounds.

One would also suspect such a monstrous engine to make quite a bit of noise in the cabin, but indeed, the Phantom has been noted as being one of the quietest rides ever made. The engine was designed specifically with this in mind, creating far greater low-end power to achieve the desired effect of silence.

Rolls-Royce Phantom Performance

Of course, the engine is just one component of what gives the Phantom its reputation of “The Best Car in the World.”

Despite its significant weight, it’s actually quite a bit lighter than the previous Phantom VII. Its chassis is also said to be about 30 percent more rigid than the last version of the Phantom, which translates to a far smoother ride in all road conditions. A new double-wishbone front axle and five-link rear suspension further adds to the level of comfort and control while driving, and air suspension adds to the Phantom’s famous “Magic Carpet Ride” appeal.

In tandem with the quieter engine, the team at Rolls-Royce went to extreme lengths to employ the latest sound-deadening technology, including insulation all around the vehicle and multiple layers of foam and other acoustic materials. The effect is a cabin so soundproof, engineers at Rolls-Royce had to double check their audio testing equipment to make sure it was working properly.
